Hundreds demonstrated in Berlin against the war in the Gaza Strip. Due to several incidents, the event was supposed to be canceled. But then the participants rebelled.
According to police reports, 17 police officers and seven participants were injured at a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Berlin. More than 30 criminal charges have been filed, the police announced on Sunday. The leader of the meeting had already declared the event over after various incidents on Saturday evening; however, around 250 people refused to leave the venue, which is why the police cleared it.
The demonstration under the motto “Stop the Gaza Genocide” began on Saturday afternoon in the Steglitz district. Around 600 people took part, it was said, and walked towards Schöneberg. Two women accompanied the march independently of each other, one of them with an Israeli flag. Both had to be protected by the police again and again.
There was a medical emergency at an interim rally: a participant became unconscious. Police officers who tried to help were obstructed by other participants in the demonstration. The person concerned eventually came to, refused further medical help and left.
According to the police, several people later masked themselves with Palestinian scarves and shouted criminal slogans. Bottles were thrown at police officers and journalists and officials were kicked.
