The office of the Vice President as a little-noticed deputy – that was once upon a time. Today, office holders have a different role – and are more closely monitored. “The Vice Presidency is the best springboard there is in US politics,” Joel Goldstein told star once. Goldstein is a law professor at the University of Saint Louis in the US and has written several books about vice presidents.

Vice presidents are important advisors to their presidents. They preside over the Senate and can decide in the event of a tie – like Biden’s vice president Kamala Harris did at the beginning. They also play an important role in presidential elections. It was Mike Pence who confirmed the election result, even though Donald Trump tried to stop him. Trump never forgave him for that. For his third candidacy, he therefore chose another vice candidate on the ticket, US Senator JD Vance.
