Security expert Christian Mölling has warned against looking at the content of statements at the US Republican Party Convention. “This is more of a religious or pseudo-religious movement,” he said on Friday in star– “The situation – international”. The research director of the German Council on Foreign Relations called the party conference that elected Donald Trump as the presidential candidate a “very burlesque show”. Mölling continued: “When you see that people are putting this bandage on their ears – it’s like Brian’s Life, where everyone is running after a shoe that has become worthy of worship by chance.” He compared Trump’s role in this worldview to that of an emperor by the grace of God. “He is basically God’s representative on earth, he is God’s will, appointed by God. And what is that: That is a very old definition of emperorship,” said Mölling.

An interesting parallel to similar movements is the claim of being “inevitable and also beyond the law”. In Mölling’s opinion, a system in which the leader is no longer exposed to criticism from within destroys itself in the long term. In the case of Trump’s movement, however, this does not have to happen before the US presidential election in November. The expert expects that the assassination attempt on Trump will fade into the background over the course of the long election campaign. Trump’s campaign has a “large engine room that is pretty good”. He will take on board the mood: “If they notice that the topic is no longer working, then they will pull something else out of the quiver.” However, this does not necessarily have anything to do with the future policy of a possible Trump administration. Mölling: “My thesis is: We are approaching these things completely wrong. We try to take statements and examine them. They don’t care at all.”
Mölling denied that a Trump victory would put Europe in a completely new situation. “We’ve already seen this whole movie,” he said. He described the demands made of the allies by Trump at the party conference as “old news.” The task of the Europeans is relatively simple. Namely: “To make it clear to the Americans, including the American middle class, that they have no interest in an unstable Europe that is under massive Russian influence.” Regardless of this, it is “an obligation” to be able to defend oneself and to respond appropriately to the reality of a war in Europe – specifically with higher defense spending instead of insisting on the debt brake.
