Relations between the USA and Israel have been strained for some time. Now an announcement has come from Israel that is intended to ease tensions.
According to his office, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet with US President Joe Biden on Tuesday afternoon (local time). Netanyahu’s departure to the USA is planned for the day before, the head of government’s office said. Biden and Netanyahu last met in person last autumn in Tel Aviv, shortly after the massacres by the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas on October 7.
According to media reports, the talks will focus on efforts to achieve a ceasefire in the Gaza war and the release of hostages in return for the release of Palestinian prisoners. In Israel, criticism of Netanyahu’s trip abroad was loud. Demonstrators had demanded that he should not be allowed to leave the country until an agreement to release the hostages had been reached.
Netanyahu wants to give speech to US politicians
On Wednesday, Israel’s head of government plans to deliver a speech to both houses of the US Congress on Israel’s military action in the Gaza Strip.
Relations between Biden and Netanyahu are considered to be strained. The Israeli Prime Minister recently caused a new crisis with a video in which he harshly attacked the US government for withholding a weapons shipment.
