Russia intercepts US B-52H bomber in the Far North

Two US bombers are said to have approached the border of Russian airspace, the Ministry of Defense reported. Only when fighter planes were called up did the US planes turn away. The Kremlin sees this as a provocation.

Russia says it has intercepted US bombers on their way to its border. Aircraft crews identified the two US planes over the Barents Sea north of the Arctic Circle as B-52H bombers, the Defense Ministry in Moscow said on Sunday.

When Russian MiG-29 and MiG-31 fighter planes approached, the Americans turned away. The US military routinely flies over international waters.

Russia accuses the US of providing military assistance to Ukraine

Moscow has responded more aggressively to these flights recently, accusing the US in June of using reconnaissance drones over neutral waters in the Black Sea to help Ukraine attack targets on the Russian-occupied Crimean peninsula. In June, the Russian defence minister ordered a response to US drone flights over the Black Sea to be prepared.

In March 2023, a Russian Su-27 fighter damaged a US MQ-9 Reaper drone, causing it to crash into the Black Sea.
