Markus Söder is 55 years old – the CSU chairman has to do without a big party in view of the corona situation in Bavaria. And of course Bavaria’s Prime Minister also works on his semicircular birthday. From the employees in the State Chancellery, however, there was at least one attention: a chocolate cake. Söder published a picture of it on his Twitter account.
One little thing caught the eye of many immediately. The well-wishers had the cake decorated with a lettering for the jubilee: “Happy Birthday, Dr. Markus Söder”. Söder holds a doctorate in law and wrote his doctoral thesis in 1998 at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg on the “Development of municipal legislation in Bavaria on the right bank of the Rhine between 1802 and 1818”. It seemed bizarre to many Twitter users that the Prime Minister had to wear his doctorate even on his birthplace.

“Who the hell writes full names including Dr. on cake?”, Commented one user, another commented: “The pastry shop was certainly relieved that they did not do their habilitation.” In general, the congratulations on the cake were very impersonal, not only because of the doctor, but also because of the surname, according to a Twitter user. “What kind of complexes do you have to have to have a doctorate on the birthday cake?” Someone asked himself.
Others immediately questioned the authenticity of the academic title, given several plagiarism cases in doctoral theses by top politicians in recent years. Some even accused Söder of “narcissism” – and observers from abroad were amazed at the prominent role such titles still play in Germany. “Prime Minister” would have gone beyond the scope, some quipped.
Union speaks out for Steinmeier
Professionally, the CSU boss dealt with the topic of the election of the Federal President on his birthday. He took part in a switch of the praesidia of the CSU and CDU, in which the Union parties voted for the re-election of Frank-Walter Steinmeier in February.
