“Joe Biden puts his country’s interests above his own” – this is how Foreign Minister Baerbock praised the US President’s withdrawal announcement. What the EU must do now is clear to her.
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has expressed her appreciation for US President Joe Biden’s decision not to run again. “I have great respect for the American president’s decision. Joe Biden puts the interests of his country above his own,” said the Green politician on the sidelines of an EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels.
Looking to the future and a possible victory by Republican Donald Trump in the presidential election in November, Baerbock said: “Of course we are all looking forward to the next few weeks and months in the USA, because cooperation between Europe and the United States of America is crucial for our peace and security.” But it is clear that, regardless of the outcome of the election, we must invest more in our own security. “Europe must become stronger, especially in the areas of foreign, security and defense policy.”
Commenting on Biden’s political work, Baerbock said that Democrat Joe Biden had done an incredible amount for transatlantic relations throughout his life – most recently through the close cooperation in response to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. “NATO is stronger than ever because we have acted and continue to act as one,” she said just one day after Biden announced that he was withdrawing from the presidential race. Before that, there had been weeks of discussion about whether the 81-year-old was still mentally and physically fit enough for the election campaign and a second term in office.
