Lisa Paus fails because of the basic child benefit and sometimes because of herself

After two years, Lisa Paus has few successes to show for herself. The Green family minister is fighting a lonely battle.

The door swings open, and the light from the large office floods into the dark hallway. Lisa Paus stands in the doorway. The Minister for Family Affairs squares her shoulders and pulls her mouth into a smile. She looks curious, as if she is lying in wait. Ready to fend off the next attack if necessary.

Paus pours water. Blue-green stools with backrests stand around a table. When Paus later tries to cross her legs, a stool is in the way. She turns it to the side, brusquely.

It’s a Monday in July and things aren’t going well for the minister. The leaders of the coalition have agreed on a budget, but even in the final year of the traffic light coalition, only fragments of one project remain: basic child benefit. The minister’s plan will largely fail. Even if she would never admit it.

Of course, basic child benefit is not just any project. It is the Greens’ most important social policy goal, firmly anchored in the 2021 coalition agreement. The assessment of whether the Greens can do more in terms of social policy than the environmental and climate party depends on it. It does not look good.
