Police report: Border controls due to the European Championship: 275 people smugglers arrested

During the European Football Championship, there were internal controls at all German borders. The Federal Police are now taking stock.

During the extensive border controls in the context of the European Football Championship, the Federal Police checked more than 1.6 million people crossing the border. According to the Federal Police Headquarters in Potsdam, a total of 9,172 illegal entries were detected between June 7 and July 19. Of these people entering the country without permission, 6,401 were turned back, it said. 1,1198 arrest warrants were executed at the borders alone.

According to the information, the police also provisionally arrested 275 suspected people smugglers. “The number of arrests is the result of a flexible and prudent operation that was adapted to the situation,” the Federal Police said.

Last Friday, the temporary controls ordered by Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) at all German internal borders, including airports, for the European Football Championship ended. According to the Federal Police, 106 football hooligans were refused entry during the extensive controls in connection with the European Championship.

Since Saturday, border controls have been replaced by undercover surveillance with targeted checks in the border regions at the Schengen internal borders with Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. Checks have been taking place at the land borders with Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland for some time. According to the Interior Ministry, the aim here is to limit irregular migration and combat people smuggling. These temporary checks are limited to December 15 for Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland and to November 11 for Austria.

There are currently temporary border controls at the German border with France due to the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris. These measures are to remain in place until September 30.

Before the European Football Championship, there were a total of 2,938 rejections at the land borders with Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland in April and May of this year, around 90 percent more than in the same period last year.
