Was a new terrorist attack planned in Belgium? Investigators suspect this and have now taken action.
As part of the terror investigation, a total of 14 house searches were carried out in several cities and municipalities in Belgium. According to the Belgian public prosecutor’s office, seven people were arrested and taken for questioning. They are suspected, among other things, of having prepared an attack. According to the information, there was initially no information about possible specific targets. The searches took place in Antwerp, Brussels, Liège, Ghent and Leopoldsburg, among other places.
In Belgium, there has been heightened vigilance against the threat of terrorism for years. Almost three dozen people died in Islamist attacks in Brussels in 2016 and 340 were injured. Most recently, an Islamist killed two Swedish fans on the sidelines of a qualifying match for the European Football Championship last year.
