Ukraine allegedly foils attacks in Poland and the Baltic States

The EU is in Russia’s sights – and not just since it supported Ukraine in its defensive struggle. Now the secret service claims to have prevented Russian-controlled attacks on Union territory.

The Ukrainian secret service SBU claims to have foiled Russian arson attacks on shopping centers, gas stations, pharmacies and markets in Poland and the Baltic states and in its own country. A group of 19 people were arrested in a total of 37 raids in four regions of the country, the agency in Kiev announced. Fake documents such as passports, driving licenses and diplomas were prepared for the attacks in the EU states.

Attacks on behalf of Russia?

The police confirmed the arrests. The head of the group was caught in the western Ukrainian region of Ivano-Frankivsk. The crimes were supposed to be carried out by Ukrainian citizens on behalf of the Russian side in order to discredit Ukraine and its citizens in the eyes of the world.

The suspects were supposed to film the fires and then send videos to the Russian domestic intelligence service FSB. The arrested people are now facing charges not only for document forgery, but also for high treason and thus a life sentence. The authorities’ statements could not be independently verified.

Ukraine regularly arrests opponents

With Western help, Ukraine has been defending itself against a Russian invasion for over two years. Martial law applies in the country. The Ukrainian authorities arrest suspected collaborators with the Russian enemy almost every day. The FSB also repeatedly reports that attacks on Russian territory are being prepared or carried out on behalf of Ukrainian secret services. It regularly says that crimes have been foiled and suspects arrested.
