When a Turkish player performed the wolf salute at the European Championships, it caused a scandal. However, a similar gesture is not banned in schools in the Free State.
Despite its similarity to the right-wing extremist wolf salute, the so-called silent fox will not be banned in Bavarian schools and daycare centers. “The teacher decides whether and when the silent fox or other methods or measures to promote social and work behavior are used,” said a spokesman for the Ministry of Education in Munich.
Bremen calls for a waiver of
There are currently no plans to ban the hand gesture in any federal state, although in Bremen, for example, there has been an appeal for some time to stop using the silent fox gesture, which calls for calm. The “political significance of the wolf salute” is “absolutely incompatible” with the basic attitude of Bremen’s daycare centers and schools.
The Munich Ministry of Education has not provided any information of this kind. “In general, an atmosphere that promotes learning and a positive school and classroom climate based on mutual respect are important prerequisites for children to be able to learn well and enjoy going to school,” they said when asked about how to deal with the silent fox. The primary school teachers are committed to implementing this task.
Schweigefuchs has been used in schools for years
“This also means that teachers should use child-friendly non-verbal methods, which can be accompanied by acoustic signals or gestures, in addition to occasion-related discussions with the class or at school assemblies to promote social behavior,” the spokesman stressed.
It is important that the meaning and concrete use in class are discussed in detail with the children beforehand. “This also applies to the so-called silent fox, which has been used individually by teachers for many years.”
Fingers form a kind of snout
In the wolf salute – just like in the silent fox – the thumb, middle and ring fingers are formed into a kind of snout. The index finger and little finger form the ears. The salute usually expresses affiliation or sympathy with the Turkish right-wing extremist Ülkücü movement and its ideology. The sign caused a stir at the European Football Championship because a Turkish national player used it to celebrate a goal.
