CDU politician Abimnwi Awemo has been the victim of a racist attack. The state parliament candidate wanted to hang election posters in Cottbus when she was attacked by a woman.

In Cottbus, Brandenburg, a CDU candidate for the state elections was physically attacked and insulted, apparently for racist reasons. Adeline Abimnwi Awemo was hanging election posters with family members when an unknown woman attacked her, police said. She hit the politician in the neck, among other things. She is said to have said, among other things: “You are not human.”

Awemo had to be treated as an outpatient in hospital after the incident on Thursday evening. Investigations were launched against the suspected perpetrator, a 29-year-old, for incitement in connection with bodily harm. The police were notified via emergency call.

Abimnwi Awemo thanks police officers

According to the current state of the investigation, she assumes that she attacked the politician, who was born in Cameroon and has German citizenship, for racist reasons. The accused herself reported Awemo for bodily harm, it was further stated. The intensive investigations by the criminal police state security are ongoing.

Awemo thanked the police officers and first responders. She said: “I went into politics to work with people and to change things together.” She will remain “the Cottbus resident who is committed to the people” there. “Together we will make it,” she explained.

Jan Redmann, chairman of the CDU in Brandenburg, said: “The increasing risk for people who are politically active in our country is unbearable.” He announced that he would travel to Cottbus to support Awemo in the election campaign. “All those who are driving the polarization in our society and thus ensuring increasing brutality are jointly responsible for this act,” he criticized.

CDU General Secretary strongly condemns attack

The general secretary of the federal CDU, Carsten Linnemann, strongly condemned the attack. It shows “exemplarily what is getting out of hand in our country,” he told the newspapers of the Funke media group. “Hatred and violence are increasing, the spiral of polarization is turning ever further,” he warned.

For the Brandenburg Greens, top candidate Antje Töpfer said her party was “horrified by the incident” and condemned “the act in the strongest possible terms.” She spoke of a “cowardly and despicable attack on a committed politician.” The Greens stood “in solidarity with the affected candidate.” Those responsible must be held accountable.

The leading candidate of the Brandenburg Left Party, Sebastian Walter, explained: “The attacks on politicians are now also affecting the CDU and are making it clear how widespread the brutality and willingness to use violence is.” Anyone who attacks candidates, regardless of the party, is “attacking democracy as a whole”. There should be “no justification” for this.

In recent months, politicians across the country have been repeatedly attacked. In Brandenburg, a new state parliament will be elected on September 22nd.
