War in Ukraine: Selenskyj announces better care for war-disabled

Tens of thousands of injured and traumatized soldiers in Ukraine need help. Ukrainian President Zelenskyj is now promising that their fate will receive more attention.

The Ukrainian president has announced better care for war-disabled people in his country. He has ordered the creation of a modern rehabilitation hospital in Ukraine, said Zelenskyj in Kiev at a congress on military medicine held for the first time in the country. “We must take better care of the injured, must be more attentive to those who return from the Russian hell,” he said.

The head of state had previously visited injured soldiers in hospital and thanked them, doctors and nursing staff for their fight for Ukraine’s survival. Tens of thousands of soldiers are dependent on medical help because of their injuries or psychological trauma from the war in Ukraine, which has been attacked by Russia.

There must also be stabilization centers with medical care for soldiers in combat zones, said Zelensky. He instructed the Defense Ministry and the General Staff of the Armed Forces to digitize the country’s medical information system in order to provide more efficient help to the injured and those returning from Russian captivity. This should also make the treatment of war wounded more transparent and understandable.

More first aid kits and tourniquets are needed to clamp blood vessels in case of injuries to stop blood loss, as well as mobile hospitals, said Zelensky. “Our doctors restore lost limbs, even operate if there is heart damage. When it seems impossible, they bring a warrior back to life,” said Zelensky.

In Kyiv, the head of state also visited the country’s largest children’s hospital, which was recently badly hit by a missile strike. Zelensky confirmed plans to rebuild the clinic. Germany is also providing financial support for the reconstruction of the Ochmatdyt children’s hospital. “We will definitely rebuild everything and prove that life is stronger than the enemy,” said the president. With Western help, Ukraine has been defending itself against the Russian war of aggression for more than two years.
