Björn Höcke is the leading figure of the Thuringian AfD. But there are also critical voices – for example from the Bundestag.
With a view to a possible government option for the AfD after the state elections in Thuringia, AfD Bundestag member Klaus Stöber has expressed criticism of the role of party leader and top candidate Björn Höcke. “Many in the AfD see him as an obstacle to assuming government responsibility,” Stöber told “Welt am Sonntag”.
Höcke is a good speaker who inspires people. “However, he likes to see himself as the center of events and wants to have all the strings in his hands. His tendency toward egocentrism has become significantly more severe in recent years,” Stöber, who comes from Eisenach in Thuringia, told the newspaper.
Thuringian AfD is considered to be proven right-wing extremist
The AfD in Thuringia is classified as proven right-wing extremist by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution and is being monitored. None of the other parties currently represented in the state parliament want to work with the AfD, which is currently leading in polls, after the state election.
Höcke told the “Welt am Sonntag” that the general rule is “that politicians should not take themselves too seriously and that the country comes before the individual.” As the leading candidate, he is currently speaking at a number of regional summer festivals organized by his party.
