Kazakhstan uprising: 26 protesters killed by regime forces

The protests in Kazakhstan are causing increasing deaths. 26 demonstrators were killed by security forces, the government said.

In Kazakhstan, the protests against the dictatorial regime continue despite the tough crackdown on the participants. There were exchanges of fire again during the night. The noise of fighting can be heard on video recordings. Eyewitnesses report that security forces opened fire on the demonstrators.

Some demonstrators are said to have barricaded themselves during the clashes with the security forces in the five-storey building of the Mir television station on Republic Square, reports the state television station Khabar 24, citing the Almaty headquarters.

The Kazakh Interior Ministry has meanwhile announced new numbers of victims. 26 demonstrators are said to have been killed in the protests. In addition, there were more than 3,000 arrests, the state broadcaster Khabar 24 reported on Friday morning, citing the ministry. The authority therefore spoke of “armed criminals”. Another 18 of them were injured.

Protests also in other cities in Kazakhstan

The protests also continue in other cities in Kazakhstan. In the city of Aktau in the west of the country, the demonstrators are said to have blocked the road to the airport, reports RIA-Novosti, citing local television. In the city of Zhanaozen around 3,000 people are said to have gathered for a peaceful rally that evening.

The administration building was stormed and destroyed during the night of the riots, reports the Telegram broadcaster Vlast, citing eyewitnesses.

Troops from Russia have arrived in Kazakhstan

The first units of a so-called peacekeeping force led by Russia arrived in Kazakhstan on Thursday. The Kazakh head of state Kassym-Shomart Tokayev had previously discussed a “terrorist threat” and requested military aid from the Russian-led military alliance, the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).
