Climate change: More green: Geywitz presents strategy against heat in cities

Where there is a lot of concrete, people often suffer from heat. The Ministry of Construction is now giving tips on how to cool down cities.

Construction Minister Klara Geywitz wants to better protect residents and nature in cities from heat. Climate change is clearly noticeable here in the summer months, said the SPD politician. “Those who live in the city suffer from tropical nights and sultry daytime temperatures in record-breaking summers.” This is a health risk, especially for older people and small children.

The Federal Ministry of Construction has therefore developed a strategy that is intended to show adjustment options for city planners and civil engineers. It recommends, for example, more parks, street trees and green roofs to provide cooling. To ensure that plants do not dry out during longer dry periods, areas must be created where rain can seep away.

Sun shades could help to ensure that playgrounds are usable in the summer. Homeless people need more drinking fountains and cool places to retreat to.

“Anyone who wants fresh money from our funding programs must consider climate adaptation and provide evidence of it,” Geywitz also stressed. Funding will be provided, for example, for rivers to be cleared of concrete and for concreted areas to be dug up and replanted with greenery.
