Attack in Beirut: Hezbollah confirms death of commander Fuad Shukr

After the Israeli attack on one of its high-ranking commanders, Hezbollah initially remained tight-lipped: Now it has confirmed his death. Hezbollah leader Nasrallah is expected to speak.

Following the Israeli attack on a suburb of the Lebanese capital Beirut, Hezbollah in Lebanon has confirmed the death of its military commander Fuad Shukr. The pro-Iranian Shiite militia described the Israeli attack on Shukr as a “sinful attack and a serious crime”.

Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah will comment on the matter at the commander’s funeral, it was said. This will take place on Thursday. So far, Hezbollah has remained largely silent on its reactions to Tuesday evening’s attack.

The Israeli military had previously said it had “taken out” Shukr in an attack on a house in a suburb of Lebanon’s capital Beirut. A spokesman confirmed the death on Tuesday evening.

According to Israeli sources, Shukr served as the right-hand man of Hezbollah Secretary General Nasrallah and was his advisor for the planning and management of military operations. He had also coordinated Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel since October 7. Shukr was also responsible for the rocket attack on the Druze town of Majdal Shams in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights that left twelve people dead three days ago. An independent verification of this information is currently not possible.

After the rocket attack in Majdal Shams, the Israeli government announced a retaliatory strike. It blamed Hezbollah for the attack. The Shiite militia denied responsibility. It had nothing to do with the attack, it said several times.
