Social: Spending on social assistance has increased significantly

The Federal Statistical Office recorded an increase of 18 percent in social assistance payments. A total of 17.6 billion euros flowed into basic old-age security, for example.

Spending on social assistance rose significantly last year. The Federal Statistical Office found an increase of 18 percent compared to the previous year. According to the figures, the providers spent a total of 17.6 billion euros net. The increase affected all social assistance benefits under Book Twelve of the Social Code (SGB XII), including basic security benefits in old age and in cases of reduced earning capacity.

According to the information, the reasons for this development include the effects of the care reform on January 1, 2022, as a result of which spending on care assistance initially fell sharply in 2022. This would have resulted in overall social spending being lower in that year. In 2023, statisticians recorded an increase in spending on care assistance by 27.4 percent to just under 4.5 billion euros.

In 2023, most of the money (57.2 percent) went into basic security benefits in old age and in cases of incapacity for work. According to the statement, the amount rose by 14.5 percent to 10.1 billion euros. At 1.5 billion euros, 16.4 percent more was spent on assistance with living expenses.

Aid for health, for overcoming particular social difficulties and for other life situations totaled 1.6 billion euros. This was 17.9 percent more than in the previous year, as calculated by the Federal Office.
