Protests: Two dead in new demonstrations in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is not at peace: A demonstrator and a policeman are killed in renewed protests. People on the streets are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Hasina.

There have been major protests in Bangladesh again: At least two people were killed in clashes between demonstrators and police. Dozens were injured, the local daily newspaper “Prothom Alo” reported. Among the victims was a policeman who was beaten to death by protesters, a police representative reported. A demonstrator also died from gunshot wounds, a doctor reported.

According to their own statements, the police mostly used rubber bullets and tear gas. Thousands took to the streets of the capital Dhaka and other districts to demand the resignation of the autocratic Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. They also criticized the police violence during the protests in July. These were directed against the reintroduction of a controversial quota system in the public service that has since been reversed. According to official figures, around 150 people were killed in the protests in July.

Under long-serving Prime Minister Hasina, who has been in power since 2009, poor, predominantly Muslim Bangladesh experienced an economic boom. Recently, however, high inflation has been causing problems for the people. In the country with more than 170 million inhabitants, unemployment is high. Human rights organizations accuse Hasina of targeting her opponents and critics and having thousands of them arrested. Freedom of expression and freedom of the press have also suffered under her rule.
