There is no progress in Germany on important issues – and that is putting a damper on the mood, says opposition leader Merz. Above all, someone has to act.
CDU leader Friedrich Merz wants Chancellor Olaf Scholz to take on more responsibility in migration and economic policy. “In view of the growing despair among the population about the future of our country, leadership is needed now. Germany cannot afford another year of standstill,” Merz writes in his regular newsletter “MerzMail”.
The new dispute over the federal budget shows that the traffic light government can no longer even agree on the toolbox it wants to use to shape policy. “There are a number of things that don’t cost any money, but that could very quickly change the mood in the country for the better – if there was still agreement within the traffic light coalition on at least some of the issues.”
Merz specifically mentions border controls to combat human trafficking, the introduction of a standard payment card for asylum seekers, faster recognition of professional qualifications, for example those of Ukrainian refugees, and a reform of the citizen’s allowance. The federal government must also agree on what economic policy it wants for Germany. “The answers to these questions are a matter for the boss,” Merz stressed.
