After the last federal election, the FDP leader surprisingly had words of praise for the Chancellor. He has not backed down from that now either – but is disillusioned.
Despite the numerous coalition disputes of the past few months, FDP leader Christian Lindner still attests to Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s (SPD) strength of character. “I have no concerns about the Chancellor’s strength of character and his positions,” said the Federal Finance Minister in a summer interview on the ZDF program “Berlin direct.” But, he added: “I have now learned to assess one thing for sure over the last two and a half years: He is also a Social Democrat and not a Free Democrat.”
Lindner had been asked whether he would repeat the praise he had given Scholz directly after the 2021 federal election. At the time, Lindner had attested that Scholz had an inner strength and a clear set of values with which he would lead the country forward. “And that is why Olaf Scholz will be a strong Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany,” he said.
