Unrest: Army: Prime Minister in Bangladesh resigns

Until recently, the 76-year-old had resisted the move – despite the protests.

Following violent clashes during protests in Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned, according to the army. An interim government will take over, said army chief Waker-Uz-Zaman. According to a report in the daily newspaper “Prothom Alo” based on sources, the autocratic head of government is said to have fled to India in a helicopter. Protesters had stormed her residence in Dhaka.

According to local media reports, around 300 people have died in the protests that have been going on since July. There were no new official figures from the authorities.
