A 46-year-old man from North Rhine-Westphalia is said to have fought in the ranks of an Islamist terrorist group in the Syrian civil war. The sentence is lenient.
The Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court has imposed a suspended sentence of one year and nine months in prison on a 46-year-old terror supporter and Syria returnee from Eschweiler. The German-Moroccan has made a confession, the court announced.
Like his already convicted brother-in-law, he supported the terrorist organization Ahrar al-Sham (The Free Men of Greater Syria) because he felt that the Syrian regime’s actions against its own citizens were unjust and criminal. He wanted to help the Syrian people.
The court took into account that his support was short-lived and had been ten years ago. In addition, he was not a member of the association. He had not shown any radical Islamist views in Germany. In addition, the regional group posed no threat to Germany. The verdict is not yet final.
