Marco Buschmann: Prisoner exchange “most difficult decision of my political career”

Federal Justice Minister Marco Buschmann was responsible for the release of the “Tiergarten murderer” Wadim Krassikow – and had to make a delicate decision.

Mister BushmanIn the largest prisoner exchange since the Cold War, Russia released 16 political prisoners in exchange for ten Russian nationals. In the USA, President Joe Biden welcomed the released prisoners euphorically. Vladimir Putin welcomed the exchanged Russians with similar enthusiasm. There were no images of celebration from Germany. Why?
For us, this was a very ambivalent decision. We decided not to fully enforce the sentence against a murderer who had been convicted by law. That is bitter.
