Until the last minute, Federal Justice Minister Marco Buschmann was concerned about whether the prisoner exchange would go ahead safely. There was “no more security” in Russia.
During the prisoner exchange with Russia, Federal Justice Minister Marco Buschmann (FDP) had doubts until the end whether the Russian side would stick to the agreement. “Not even when the plane with the freed prisoners landed in Cologne/Bonn could we be sure,” Buschmann said in an interview with the starFinally, the Russian secret service FSB regularly uses poison “to destroy people’s lives or health directly or indirectly in the most perfidious way”.
After landing in Germany, the freed prisoners were given a medical examination: “Personally, that was my biggest concern: that Russia had poisoned them before departure. But from what we know so far, thank God that is not the case.”
Marco Buschmann fears “more political prisoners”
The Federal Minister of Justice advises Germans against travelling to Russia. “Nobody has been safe in Russia for a long time. And I strongly advise everyone not to travel to a country where nobody is safe unless absolutely necessary,” said Buschmann: “I cannot allay anyone’s fear that Putin will take more political prisoners.”
But he does not believe that the exchange increased the risk. “Under Vladimir Putin, almost 40 journalists were killed. Countless others were arbitrarily detained,” said Buschmann. “There was no security in this country even before this exchange.”
