After the attack on the Hamas leader in Tehran, media reported on arrests within the Iranian security apparatus. Now the judiciary is reacting.
Iran’s judiciary has denied reports of arrests of security officials following the fatal attack on the foreign chief of the Islamist Hamas, Ismail Haniya, in Tehran. “The speculations about this in the Western press and social media are false,” said judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir at a press conference. According to the Isna news agency, there were intensive investigations after the attack, but no arrests were made.
The New York Times and the British Telegraph reported on the arrests, citing Iranian officials. Persian-language social media also speculated about a security breach and cooperation between Iranian agents and the Israeli secret service Mossad. The Iranian parliament’s security commission categorically denied this. There had been no “infiltration” of the Iranian security apparatus by the Mossad.
Hamas’ foreign chief Haniya was killed in Tehran last week. Hamas and Iran blame Israel for the attack and have promised retaliation. Israel has not yet commented on Haniya’s death.
