In a telephone conversation with the Israeli head of government, Chancellor Scholz called for reason and demanded an agreement between Israel and the radical Islamic Hamas.
In a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stressed the need for an agreement with the radical Islamic Hamas for de-escalation in the entire Middle East. An end to the war in the Gaza Strip would be “a decisive step towards regional de-escalation,” said Scholz, as deputy government spokesman Wolfgang Büchner announced on Sunday.
The time has now come to finalize the agreement on the release of the hostages and a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, Scholz said. Israel has achieved many military goals in the fight against Hamas, but at the same time the number of civilian casualties and human suffering in the Gaza Strip is “enormous.”
Negotiations are ongoing, but Olaf Scholz fears escalation
In his conversation with Netanyahu, Scholz again warned of the “danger of a regional conflagration” in the Middle East in view of the threats from Iran and its allies against Israel. Now more than ever, it is important to “break the destructive spiral of retaliatory violence, reduce tensions and work constructively for de-escalation.”
Qatar, Egypt and the USA have been negotiating for months to achieve a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of the hostages still being held there. Recently, however, the conflict in the Middle East has escalated considerably. According to Netanyahu’s office, Israel has agreed to continue the negotiations next week.
