Riots after bloody crime: 12-year-old charged with rioting in England

For days, there were serious riots by right-wing extremists in British cities. The British judiciary is cracking down hard.

The judiciary has so far charged hundreds of people, including a 12-year-old, because of the right-wing extremist riots in British cities. The boy is said to have taken part in riots in the north-west English town of Southport. He is the youngest defendant to date, as the broadcaster Sky News reported.

So far, the police have arrested a total of 927 people and charged 466 of them. Several perpetrators have already been sentenced to prison. A 41-year-old man has been sentenced to two years and eight months in prison for taking part in riots at a hotel near Rotherham where asylum seekers are housed. An 18-year-old who threw stones at police officers in the town of Darlington and cheered when they were hit was sentenced to one and a half years in youth detention.

Premier cancels summer vacation

The British government was satisfied that the situation had recently calmed down. However, they would remain vigilant and would not become careless, said a government spokeswoman. She praised the quick reaction of the judiciary. Prime Minister Keir Starmer had also cancelled his summer holiday because of the riots and the authorities’ reaction to them, said the spokeswoman.

According to the industry association UK Hospitality, turnover in the hospitality industry fell sharply in some areas due to the riots. The incident was preceded by a knife attack in Southport in which three girls were stabbed and several children injured. The false report that the perpetrator was a Muslim migrant was spread on social networks. The 17-year-old suspect was born in Great Britain to Rwandan parents.
