The oldest nuclear power plant in the world is located near the German border. A malfunction leads to automatic shutdown. Is there a danger?
A malfunction in the world’s oldest nuclear power plant still in operation near the German border has led to an automatic emergency shutdown. The malfunction occurred in a steam generator in the non-nuclear part of the Swiss Beznau plant, the energy company Axpo announced.
As a result, water vapor was visible above the plant at times. There was no danger to people or the environment. Unit 1 was automatically disconnected from the grid. The company assured that it was in a safe condition.
In operation for more than 50 years
Beznau Block 1 was put into operation in 1969. The block only went back online in June after a revision lasting several weeks. The Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate ENSI has been informed, Axpo said.
The nuclear power plant is located south of Waldshut-Tiengen in Baden-Württemberg and is less than seven kilometers as the crow flies from the German border.
