Russian-Ukrainian war: Russian region of Belgorod also declares state of emergency

After Ukrainian soldiers invaded the Russian border region of Kursk, the neighboring region of Belgorod is now also under pressure. The governor explains the situation.

In the Russian border region with Ukraine, the Belgorod region has now also declared a state of emergency. The situation in the region remains quite difficult and tense, said Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov. Previously, after the invasion of Ukrainian troops, the Kursk region had declared a state of emergency of national importance, one level higher than in Belgorod.

Like Kursk and other areas, the Belgorod region again reported drone and missile attacks from the Ukrainian side. The Russian Defense Ministry reported 117 repelled drone attacks and 4 destroyed tactical missiles. Russian military airfields were also said to have been attacked. The information could not be independently verified.

State of emergency should enable release of funds

Belgorod has long been under attack from the Ukrainian side. Last year, self-proclaimed volunteer units, in which Russians also fight on the Ukrainian side, moved in temporarily. Last week, Ukrainian soldiers briefly stayed in the village of Poros in the Belgorod region, which borders the Kursk region, and recorded a video with a flag. After a visit to the region, Gladkov reported that residents had been rescued from the village and the uniformed soldiers had withdrawn.

There is daily shelling from the Ukrainian side, said Gladkov. There are dead and injured civilians and destroyed houses, he said. The state of emergency now makes it possible to release additional funds for the protection of the population.

With regard to Kiev’s ground offensive in the Kursk area, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj declared that Russia itself should now feel the effects of the war. Kiev is using mainly drones and missiles of its own production for the attacks, which are part of the defensive fight against the Russian war of aggression. The Ukrainian air defense again reported numerous drone attacks from the Russian side. According to the report, 17 of 23 attacks were repelled.
