To support the fight against Russia, Germany has given Ukraine several Patriot air defense systems. Now the Federal Republic needs reinforcements.
The US government has approved the sale of up to 600 missiles and other equipment for Patriot air defense systems to Germany. The responsible agency for international security cooperation (DSCA) said on Thursday that the arms deal, worth a total of five billion dollars (4.5 billion euros), strengthens the security of the USA “by improving the security of a NATO ally that is an important force for political and economic stability in Europe.” Germany has sold several Patriot systems to Ukraine.
The main contractor for the possible arms deal, which also includes the associated equipment and technical support, will be the US arms company Lockheed Martin.
Germany is not only buying Patriot systems for itself
New NATO defence plans require Germany to quadruple its air defences to protect infrastructure and armed forces in the event of serious tensions or war, security sources said last month.
Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Germany has handed over three Patriot air defense systems to Kiev and still has nine units of its own. During the Cold War, when the Federal Republic was on NATO’s external border, the Bundeswehr still had 36 such systems.
At the beginning of the year, several NATO members announced an order for up to 1,000 Patriot systems. These included Germany, the Netherlands, Romania and Spain. It can be assumed that Berlin wants to use the order to increase its own stocks and make further deliveries to Ukraine.
