Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump has defended his personal attacks against Democratic opponent Kamala Harris. “I believe I have a right to attack her personally,” Trump said at a press conference at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. “I’m very angry with her.”
Others are also very angry with Harris because of what she is doing to the country and how she is using the justice system against opponents, said the 78-year-old. “I don’t have much respect for her intelligence, and I think she will be a terrible president.” That is why it is so important that he wins the election in November.
Harris is the Democratic presidential candidate following US President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the election campaign and is thus running against Trump. The Republican regularly denigrates her in campaign appearances as “stupid”, “crazy” and a dangerous “left-wing radical”.
Particularly controversial: Trump’s outburst that Harris had “suddenly turned black”
Recently, Trump also sharply attacked his rival with regard to her origins and skin color. Harris had long campaigned exclusively on the basis of her Indian ancestry and then “suddenly became black,” Trump claimed during an appearance before the National Association of Black Journalists in Chicago. This caused a great stir. Harris is the daughter of a black Jamaican, her mother is from India.
Several Republicans – including Nikki Haley, who herself ran as a presidential candidate in the party’s primaries – had recently publicly advised Trump to make fewer personal attacks against Harris and instead make more substantive points.
The election cannot be won by talking about what “race” Harris belongs to or that she is “stupid,” Haley said on Tuesday on the right-wing television channel Fox News. Haley lost to Trump in the Republican presidential primaries, but she now supports his candidacy.
Donald Trump: “I have to do it my way”
Donald Trump was asked about these statements by Haley and others at the press conference, but dismissed such advice. His campaign is going well, Trump replied. “I think we’re hitting a nerve.” This is a different kind of race. “All we have to do is call our opponent a communist or a socialist or someone who is going to destroy our country.”
Trump said he appreciated Haley’s advice, but added: “I have to do it my way.” Harris also attacked him personally and called him “weird.” Compared to what the other side is doing and how radical and “sick” his opponents are, he is running a “very quiet campaign,” the Republican claimed. “I mean, we’re here. There’s no shouting.”
Harris slightly ahead of Trump in polls
Trump’s press conference resembled a campaign rally in many ways, with the former president beginning with a 45-minute discussion of why he thought the country would go downhill with Harris. Supporters were present and interrupted his remarks several times with cheers. Afterwards, Trump shook hands with his supporters, took selfies with them and signed autographs.
In several national polls, Harris is now slightly ahead of Trump. Her campaign team announced on Thursday that, in addition to an already agreed televised debate with Trump on September 10, there would be a second debate in October. An exact date for the second debate was not initially given. Trump’s campaign team did not initially comment. A televised debate is scheduled for October 1 for vice presidential candidates Tim Walz and Vance.
