With demonstrations at the CSD, the LGBTQ scene shows its presence and fights for equal rights. Neo-Nazis took advantage of this in Bautzen for their own march. And they also want to cause disruption in Leipzig.
After the neo-Nazis marched in the Christopher Street Day (CSD) demonstration in Bautzen, Saxony, Berlin’s queer representative wants to visit and support the CSD in Leipzig on Saturday. It is about presence and solidarity for the local gay and lesbian scene, Alfonso Pantisano announced to the dpa. In Leipzig, too, right-wing extremist groups and neo-Nazis have called for counter-events to the CSD. “Bautzen should be a warning to us.” We must not “leave our streets and our freedom” to the enemies of democracy.
The Federal Government’s Queer Commissioner, State Secretary Sven Lehmann (Greens), also announced his visit to Leipzig. He expects the police to protect the CSD and ensure that a safe demonstration is possible, he announced.
More than 1,000 people took part in the CSD parade in Bautzen on Saturday. At the same time, around 680 people from the right-wing extremist camp and neo-Nazi groups gathered. The police kept the two events apart. The police confiscated balaclavas from right-wing extremist demonstrators and reported that “xenophobic slogans” had apparently been sung. The CSD organizers canceled a planned closing party for security reasons.
Christopher Street Day takes place every year in many cities around the world and commemorates the events of June 28, 1969 in New York: Police stormed the “Stonewall Inn” bar on Christopher Street, sparking protests by gays, lesbians and transgender people that lasted several days. The CSD is intended to remind people of their rights.
