The risks are enormous: Despite this, the immediate vicinity of the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia remains hotly contested. The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency never tires of warning.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) believes that the safety of the Ukrainian Zaporizhia nuclear power plant is under acute threat following an attack nearby. There was an explosion in the immediate vicinity of the security zone, which IAEA experts on site believe was caused by a drone with an explosive charge, the organization said.
“Once again we are seeing an escalation of the threats to nuclear safety at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant,” warned IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi. He remains “extremely concerned” and calls on all sides to exercise restraint.
Fierce fighting despite all warnings
According to observers, the area around the power plant was heavily fought over last week. Despite all the appeals for restraint, there are no signs that the fighting is abating, they said. Damage has been reported several times in the vicinity of the power plant in recent days.
“Nuclear power plants are resilient to technical or human failure and also extreme external influences, but they are not built to withstand direct military attacks,” said Grossi.
The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, which Russia has occupied as part of its invasion of Ukraine that has been going on for almost two and a half years, is repeatedly the target of attacks or acts of sabotage. Moscow and Kiev blame each other for this.
