Kamala Harris and the party convention: How long will the honeymoon last?

The Democratic Party Convention begins in the evening. Joe Biden wants to symbolically hand over the leadership to Kamala Harris. In several key states, she is ahead of Donald Trump.

Street battles are taking place outside, chaos reigns inside – that was the situation when the Democrats gathered in Chicago for their party convention in 1968. Just a few weeks ago, some people feared that history could repeat itself when the party meets again 56 years later in the Illinois metropolis.

In 1968, the incumbent president was Lyndon B. Johnson. He had actually sought another term in office, but ultimately decided against it. There was unrest in the party. Vice President Hubert Humphrey was elected as the presidential candidate, but it was a so-called “open convention” – others had also run for election. What was left was a divided party.
