Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is continuing his counter-program to the Democratic Party Convention and is trying to win votes in the hotly contested state of Michigan. During an appearance at a police station in the city of Howell, the 78-year-old focused on the issue of crime. In the big cities of the USA, you cannot go out on the street to buy a loaf of bread, he said. “You get shot, robbed, raped – whatever it may be,” claimed the Republican. “We have these cities that are great cities where people are afraid to live – they are fleeing the cities of our country.”
Trump: Harris brings death and destruction
Trump – as usual – blamed the Democrats and their presidential candidate Kamala Harris for the crime. “Kamala Harris will cause crime, chaos, destruction and death if she is allowed to become President of the United States,” warned the Republican. “I will ensure law and order, security and peace.” In his usual manner, Trump portrayed immigrants as criminals. Prisons all over the world are being emptied and the inmates are being sent to the USA, he said again without providing any evidence.
Trump compares himself to Al Capone
“I love our country. (…) I didn’t have to do that. I didn’t have to be indicted,” Trump continued, referring to his candidacy for the presidential election on November 5. “I’ve been indicted more times than the great Alphonse Capone, right?” he said, referring to the notorious crime kingpin Al Capone (1899-1947) – a statement that is not correct. CNN reported, citing a Capone expert, that the former boss of the Chicago underworld had been indicted at least six times.
Trump has been criminally charged four times in the past year and a half – in the state of Georgia and in the US capital Washington for his attempts to overturn the result of the 2020 presidential election, in the state of Florida for taking secret government documents and in the metropolis of New York for concealing hush money payments. At the end of May, he was found guilty in this trial. This makes the former president a convicted criminal.
Trump denies all allegations and describes all investigations as a “political witch hunt” designed to torpedo his election campaign. Trump said his parents are looking down from heaven and wondering: “He was such a good boy. I don’t know what happened.”
Trump on tour in the swing states
The Democratic Party Convention began in Chicago on Monday – Trump’s political opponent Harris is in the spotlight. Trump and his running mate JD Vance are therefore focusing on a contrasting program and are touring the politically hotly contested swing states. The swing states are crucial for the election outcome – there it is not clear in advance whether the Republican or Democratic candidate will win by tradition. Further events are planned in North Carolina, Arizona, Georgia and Nevada.
