Chancellor Angela Merkel and her husband Joachim Sauer at the opening of the Richard Wagner Festival in Bayreuth on Sunday. Both are considered big fans of Wagner music and have been coming back to Bayreuth for years. Last year the festival was canceled due to corona. And also at this year’s edition in the Festspielhaus on the Green Hill, certain restrictions apply due to the ongoing pandemic. This includes, for example, that significantly fewer guests were admitted than in the previous editions. Only those who have tested negative, have been completely vaccinated or have recovered are allowed into the opera house. In addition, an FFP2 mask is mandatory. At the beginning of the festival, a woman stood at the conductor’s desk for the first time in the festival’s 145-year history. The 43-year-old Oksana Lyniv from Ukraine opens the Bayreuth Festival with the opera “The Flying Dutchman”.
