Israel’s army wants to take action against terrorist groups in a humanitarian zone in the Gaza Strip. 50 Palestinians are said to have been killed in fighting within one day.
The Israeli army has called on residents of a small area in the south of the Gaza Strip to flee before a new military operation. The area affected is within a humanitarian zone, according to a statement from an army spokesman. The military will take action against terrorist organizations there, according to the appeal published in Arabic.
The residents are therefore advised to move further west. People in a district of Khan Yunis and a district of Deir al-Balah are affected.
Israel’s army has already called on people within the humanitarian zone to flee several times in order to fight against the Islamist Hamas in areas there. The humanitarian zone has already been reduced in size. According to Israeli media, it is currently 42 square kilometers in size, which corresponds to a total area of eleven percent of the Gaza Strip. Aid organizations repeatedly criticize the catastrophic conditions in the area where the majority of the population is currently staying.
More deaths in fighting in Gaza Strip
The Hamas-controlled health authority announced that 50 Palestinians had been killed and 124 others injured in fighting in the Gaza Strip within one day. The number of people killed in the Gaza Strip since the start of the Gaza war more than ten months ago has risen to 40,223, according to the figures. At least 92,981 other Palestinians have been injured during this period. The figures cannot be independently verified. They also do not distinguish between fighters and civilians.
Army: Dozens of terrorists “eliminated”
Israel’s army announced that it would continue its operations in the Tal al-Sultan district of Rafah, among other places. “The troops eliminated dozens of armed terrorists, destroyed large parts of the terrorist infrastructure in the area and discovered a large quantity of weapons,” it said in a statement.
According to reports, fighting is also continuing in the city of Khan Yunis. “The troops eliminated several terrorists who were active in the area from which numerous rockets were fired at communities in southern Israel.” Soldiers also attacked Hamas targets in the center of the Gaza Strip.
