The extradition of a person from the left-wing scene for a trial in Hungary has caused a lot of criticism. Politicians have visited her there – and are worried.
After the controversial extradition of the person known as “Maja” from the left-wing scene for a trial in Hungary, left-wing politicians are criticizing her prison conditions. Left-wing leader Martin Schirdewan and Martina Renner, domestic policy spokeswoman for the Left group in the Bundestag, have reportedly visited her in prison in Hungary. They said that “Maja’s” prison conditions were appalling. Any contact with fellow prisoners is prohibited and there is 24/7 video surveillance, they said.
The 23-year-old Jena-born person, who identifies as non-binary, was extradited to Hungary on the night of June 28th – just a few hours after the Berlin Higher Regional Court gave the green light. An appeal against this to the Federal Constitutional Court was successful. But before this appeal was filed, “Maja” was already in Hungary.
This approach continues to be criticized to this day. Schirdewan and Renner stressed again that the treatment was contrary to the rule of law. The federal government must ensure that the person is returned as quickly as possible.
The authorities in Hungary accuse “Maja” of having been a member of a criminal organization since 2017 whose goal was to attack sympathizers of the extreme right. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office is also investigating “Maja” for this reason. Due to the extradition request from Hungary, it postponed its proceedings.
