Flensburg public prosecutor’s office: investigation into drones over critical infrastructure

According to media reports, several drones were spotted over an industrial site in Brunsbüttel. Where they came from and what their destination was is unknown. Investigations have now begun.

The Flensburg public prosecutor’s office is investigating repeated drone flights over critical infrastructure in Schleswig-Holstein. An investigation has been launched on suspicion of spying for the purposes of sabotage, a spokesman said. The authority did not provide any information on the origin and destination of the drones. “Bild” and “Spiegel” had previously reported on this.

According to media reports, the drone flights have been taking place over the ChemCoast Park in Brunsbüttel since the beginning of August. According to “Spiegel”, up to four drones have appeared over the site on several nights since August 8th.

As “Spiegel” further wrote, the domestic police drones used cannot keep up with the suspicious high-tech devices, which fly over great distances and can reach speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour. A special device failed in an attempt to locate the drones.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defense told the German Press Agency in Berlin that the Air Operations Center was in close contact with the state authorities in the case. The Bundeswehr was providing the police with radar data to complete the situation report. This is part of the ongoing task of air security. A spokesman for the Territorial Command of the Bundeswehr in Berlin added that this administrative assistance had been provided since last Monday.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior declined to comment. “The underlying facts are solely the responsibility of the Schleswig-Holstein state police,” said a spokeswoman for the ministry. The Federal Police and the Federal Criminal Police Office are providing support.
