Migration: Faeser examines financial aid for deported Afghans

Criminals and dangerous people should be deported consistently. But this often fails due to legal hurdles. “Financial travel support” is also being discussed as a possible solution.

In order to reduce legal hurdles in the deportation of Afghan criminals, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) is considering financial aid for those affected. According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, it is currently examining how the conditions for deportations to Afghanistan can be created. The payment of “financial travel support” could also serve this purpose, a ministry spokesperson said. The “Bild” newspaper was the first to report on the plan.

According to the Interior Ministry, the states responsible for deportations should decide whether such support will be paid out and in what amount.

In June, after the fatal knife attack in Mannheim, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) announced that he would again allow the deportation of serious criminals and terrorist threats to Afghanistan and Syria. However, there are a number of hurdles in implementing this plan. In individual cases, such measures could also fail in German courts if Afghan citizens argue that they would face poverty if they were deported.

There are already programs in place for rejected asylum seekers whose voluntary departure is supported by the state by paying for their flights and providing financial start-up assistance in their home country. The amount of the sum usually depends on the country of origin and family status.
