The right-wing populist Nigel Farage used the seaside resort in Great Britain as a springboard for his career. You rarely meet him here. A stroll through a city that has fallen behind.
The lifeguard shrugs her shoulders. “We warn people, but they ignore us.” The “Groyne 41” section of the beach directly on the pier in Clacton-on-Sea has been permanently closed to swimmers for four years. The water quality measured here is regularly so bad that the environmental agency has given up on the beach. A year ago, a local newspaper reported, swimmers reported bouts of nausea after swimming; high levels of E. coli bacteria were measured in the water at the time. “At least we are not aware of any cases of illness at the moment,” says Will, the press officer for the “Beach Patrol”, when asked. How reassuring.
