For months, Russia was on the offensive at the front and was advancing. The Ukrainian counterattack in the Kursk region took the Russians by surprise – with consequences for the occupying troops in Ukraine.
According to experts, Moscow has withdrawn troops from the neighboring country it invaded for the first time due to the advance of Ukrainian troops in the western Russian region of Kursk. The Russian military leadership has at least moved individual units from the southern Ukrainian region of Zaporizhia to strengthen the defense of Kursk, wrote the US Institute for War Studies (ISW). It referred to entries by deployed soldiers on social networks. According to the report, Russia is trying not to weaken the main axis of its attack in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk.
Officially, Kiev has not provided any new information on the advance in Russia. According to the Russian exile media portal Meduza, the heaviest fighting is taking place along the route between the small town of Sudzha, which has been taken by the Ukrainians, and the regional capital of Kursk, as well as around the strategically important town of Korenjewo. There, the Ukrainians have made progress in their attempt to bypass and encircle the settlement from the north and south. However, the gains in territory are currently small compared to the first week of the Ukrainian counteroffensive.
Russian army puts pressure on Donbass
On the other side, Russia has continued its advance in the Donetsk region. Russian troops are particularly active near the cities of Pokrovsk and Toretsk. However, near Pokrovsk, the military has changed its main direction of attack. Instead of marching directly towards the city, part of the forces have turned south. The aim is apparently to bring the entire Ukrainian defense line in the south of the Donbass to collapse.
