Election date: Steinmeier sets federal election for 28 September 2025

Election date: Steinmeier sets federal election for 28 September 2025

There has been much speculation in recent months about the collapse of the traffic light coalition and an early federal election. But the regular election date also has to be officially set.

The next Bundestag will be elected on September 28th next year. This was decided by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. He thereby followed a recommendation made by the Federal Cabinet in July.

According to the Federal Election Act, election day must always be a Sunday or a public holiday. There are fixed requirements for the date in the Basic Law. The election must take place no earlier than 46 and no later than 48 months after the start of the electoral term. For the election to the 21st German Bundestag, there is therefore a time corridor from August 27 to October 26, 2025.

It is already clear that the next Bundestag will be considerably smaller than the current one. The parliament will shrink from the current 733 to 630 seats. This is what the new electoral law implemented by the traffic light coalition provides for.
