It is still not clear who will lead the future government in France. President Emmanuel Macron has now at least made it clear who he does not want to see at the top.
According to President Emmanuel Macron’s wishes, the new French government should not be led by a prime minister from the left-wing camp. Macron’s office announced on Monday that any government led by the election winner New Popular Front (NFP) would immediately face a vote of no confidence. Instead, Macron will consult with high-ranking politicians on Tuesday about how to proceed.
A statement from the NFP was not initially available. Macron himself belongs to the liberal-bourgeois camp of the Renaissance movement, which failed to gain a majority in the election at the end of June and beginning of July.
Macron camp without majority since new elections
Macron called for early elections following the rise of the far-right in the European elections. However, he lost his parliamentary majority in the process. The French constitution gives the head of state the freedom to appoint whomever he wants to the office of prime minister. However, this person must be able to survive votes of no confidence from the opposition in parliament.
The new government, regardless of its composition, will face difficult tasks, most notably drawing up a budget for 2025. Due to high new debt, France is under pressure from the European Commission and the bond markets.
