The heaviest hail of bombs and rockets in two and a half years of war has fallen on Ukraine. One night later, the Russian army is attacking again.
Russia has carried out heavy air strikes using various types of weapons on Ukraine for the second night in a row. According to initial reports from Ukrainian authorities, at least four people were killed – two people when a missile hit a hotel in Kryvyi Rih and two others when drones struck Zaporizhia.
“We will undoubtedly respond to Russia for this and all other attacks,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on the social network X. “Crimes against humanity must not go unpunished.”
According to media reports, 52,000 people in Kiev took refuge in underground stations that serve as bunkers because of the nightly air raid warning. Falling debris sparked grass fires on the eastern outskirts of the city of one million inhabitants. All aircraft heading for Kiev were shot down, the military administration of the Kiev region announced. According to regional authorities, there were also hits and damage in the Sumy, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Kherson and Khmelnytskyi regions.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, 5 Russian cruise missiles and 60 of 81 drones deployed were intercepted. Ten drones were still flying in Ukrainian airspace at 9:00 a.m. local time (8:00 a.m. CEST). Other drones crashed.
No means against Kinzal rockets
Three Kinzhal (Dagger) hypersonic missiles and two Iskander missiles could not be shot down, as Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk announced on Telegram. The Ukrainian military’s figures cannot be verified in detail, but they provide a largely accurate overview of the extent of an attack.
According to observers, the attack was again primarily aimed at Ukraine’s energy system. Ukraine has not provided information about hits on military targets. According to unconfirmed reports, the Starokostiantyniv air base in the western Khmelnytskyi region could have been a target. On Monday, Russia launched an attack against Ukraine with 127 rockets and cruise missiles as well as more than 100 combat drones. This was the highest number reported by the Ukrainian military in two and a half years of war.
