The Ukrainian army was successful in its offensive in the Russian region of Kursk. Meanwhile, in eastern Ukraine, Russian troops are advancing further westward – at a rapid pace.
According to military observers, Russian troops are advancing at a rapid pace on the Pokrovsk front in eastern Ukraine. Within a few days, they have brought most of the town of Novohrodivka, located southeast of Pokrovsk, under control, according to a report by the US Institute for War Studies (ISW).
According to ISW, the Russian army is now concentrating on fighting its way along a railway line towards Pokrovsk. According to experts, the relatively rapid Russian advance in Novohrodivka in the Donetsk region was probably possible because of a Ukrainian retreat from the area.
Selenskyj decides to strengthen the region
In view of the Russian advance on Pokrovsk, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he had decided to reinforce the region at a meeting with the military leadership. Russian troops had recently repeatedly announced the capture of entire towns in the Donetsk area.
The Ukrainian authorities have also ordered further evacuations. Due to the worsening security situation, the zone for forced evacuations has been expanded. Children and their parents or guardians must leave their homes, the governor of Donetsk announced. A total of 27 villages in the Kostiantynivka and Selydove area were listed. An evacuation of villages had already been ordered in the Pokrovsk area due to the advance of Russian troops.
