A new state parliament will be elected in Thuringia on Sunday. At the end of the election campaign, the candidates will answer questions from the audience in Weimar. The round will be broadcast live.
Shortly before the eagerly awaited state elections in Thuringia, the top candidates of the seven most important parties will meet in Weimar to exchange views and answer questions from the public.
The moderators Nikolaus Blome (ntv/RTL) and Alex Küper (Antenne Brandenburg) will welcome Madeleine Henfling (Greens), Thomas Kemmerich (FDP), Georg Maier (SPD), Bodo Ramelow (The Left), Mario Voigt (CDU) and Katja Wolf (BSW) to the live debate from 5 p.m. Since AfD top candidate Björn Höcke has cancelled his participation at short notice for “health reasons”, his co-state spokesman Stefan Möller will represent him.
Specialists and top employees worried
The 90-minute live broadcast will focus on the pressing questions of the Thuringian population, which were submitted in advance by Antenne Thüringen listeners. In view of the concerns about a strong performance by the AfD, SPD top candidate Georg Maier said: “The election in Thuringia sends a signal to the world.” He is reacting to the fact that foreign specialists and top employees will feel put off by a strong AfD.
AfD could become the strongest force in Thuringia
In Thuringia, as in Saxony, a new state parliament will be elected on Sunday. In polls for the election in Thuringia, the AfD is in first place with around 30 percent, ahead of the CDU led by top candidate Mario Voigt, and could become the strongest force in a state parliament for the first time. In third place is the Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) coalition, ahead of Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow’s Left Party. The SPD is just above the five percent hurdle, while the Greens and FDP could miss out on re-entering the Erfurt state parliament.
According to polls, the minority coalition of the Left Party, SPD and Greens, which has been in power for five years, is far from a majority.
