Thousands of Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in the fight against Russian aggression. President Zelensky reminds us how long his country has been fighting.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recalled the many Ukrainian soldiers killed. In a video address, he recalled how long Ukraine has been defending itself against Russian attacks. “The year 14. The occupation of Crimea. Fighting in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. The beginning of Russia’s bloody hybrid war against Ukraine. And the beginning of Ukrainian military resistance,” he said in Kyiv.
In 2022, Russia attempted to destroy the Ukrainians with a large-scale invasion, he said. “Comprehensive Ukrainian defense. The courage of our people. The strength of the Ukrainian character. And the gratitude of our entire people, our entire state to every single soldier,” said Zelensky. He remembered “all the fallen Ukrainian heroes who are returning home on a shield.”
On the occasion of the day of remembrance for fallen soldiers, the president also met with relatives, awarded medals posthumously and gave 20 families vouchers for apartments. How many soldiers Ukraine has lost through death or injury since February 2022 has not been disclosed in Kyiv. Zelensky spoke of 31,000 dead soldiers this February; however, military observers believe the number is higher.
